2019 Art Omi: Architecture Residency

Art Omi is pleased to announce the ten 2019 architects selected for the 2019 Art Omi: Architecture Residency. Now in its third year, the Art Omi: Architecture residency is the first and only of its kind in the United States, inviting ten early- to mid-career architects from around the world to develop work during a two-week residency at Art Omi’s campus in Ghent, New York. Described as “one of the world’s most inspiring design residencies,” by Artsy, alumni include architects from over ten countries. In 2018, alumni Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers, of Dream the Combine, were named as winners of the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program with their project Hide & Seek while in residency at Art Omi.

The ten architects selected for the 2019 cohort were chosen through a competitive juried process, and work on an array of scales and interests, including art, technology, design and urbanism. During their residency in February and March, they will have the opportunity to design, experiment, innovate, and collaborate with peers in an architecture studio-like setting in the scenic Hudson Valley.

“Architects now, more than ever, need the time and the place to create freely,” says Warren James, Director of Art Omi: Architecture. “Once on campus, untethered, the Architecture Residents focus on their own new ideas and collectively different perspectives begin to take shape. The Art Omi: Architecture program also aims to create with the Architecture Residency new communities of interconnected architects working worldwide, that can tackle the urgent challenges of our time.”

The 2019 Architecture Residency is made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The Architect’s Newspaper is the 2019 Art Omi: Architecture Residency Media Sponsor.

Art Omi: Architecture

The Art Omi: Architecture program is conceived to facilitate projects exploring the intersection of architecture, art, and landscape by architects. Nestled within the campus of Art Omi, this unique program offers the  pristine Architecture Fields with 60-acres designated to cultivate the production of physical structures such as pavilions, installations, landscape interventions, and constructed environments designed by architects. In addition, the program brings curated exhibitions to its facilities in a landscaped setting and organizes in New York City an architecture-related annual event. Since January 2016, Manhattan-based architect Warren James has served as Director of Art Omi: Architecture.
