InConstruction: Peter Eisenman

Opens February 15

On View February 15 – March 15 2020 in the Kantor Lobby

Art Omi: Architecture opens the exhibition InConstruction: Peter Eisenman with a reception on Saturday, February 15 from 2 – 4 pm. The exhibition will be on view in the Kantor Lobby in the Benenson Center at Art Omi February 15 – March 15, 2020.

“Peter Eisenman does not build often, but—often—when he does, it’s worth taking note,” recently noted Architectural Record. InConstruction: Peter Eisenman presents his most recent built work, the Pinerba Condominium in Milan, Italy. The exhibition presents a scale model, renderings illuminating the architect’s creative process, and other photographic documentation of the project.

The serpentine, nine-story structure of Pinerba Condominium snakes through its triangular site disrupting the grid of the surrounding residential neighborhood. The southern end of Eisenman’s building marries the facade of an existing travertine stone structure facing the Piazza Carlo Erba, from which Pinerba Condominium derives its name. Eisenman continues the application of rugged travertine across the lower part of the structure, contrasting it with airy upper levels employing metal paneling, glass balustrades and Carrara marble. The resulting structure offers complex interplay between space and volume.

With the Pinerba Condominum, Eisenman masterfully completes a commission of a commercially viable apartment complex, while also succeeding in a statement on the architectural situation in contemporary Milan, a city where ancient neighborhoods are punctuated by modernist glass towers. In Eisenman’s structure, these disparate worlds unite.

Also on view in the Newmark Gallery at Art Omi through March 1: Single-Handedly: Contemporary Architects Draw by Hand, curated by Warren James and Nalina Moses. Copies of Single-Handedly (2019, Princeton Architectural Press) will be available for purchase and signing by Nalina Moses at the February 15 reception.

InConstruction is an intimate exhibition series at Art Omi that focuses on architecture and design projects, by contemporary architects.

Art Omi: Architecture facilitates projects by architects which explore the intersection of architecture, art. This unique program offers architects 60 acres of the Art Omi Sculpture & Architecture Park to cultivate the production of physical structures such as pavilions, installations, landscape interventions, and constructed environments designed by architects. In addition, the program brings curated exhibitions to its facilities in a landscaped setting and organizes in New York City an architecture-related annual event.
