The Language of Surface: Paintings by Debbie Ma

Exploring Debbie Ma’s painting vocabulary is to experience an interesting exercise in the art of limitations. Ma uses a particular language made up of abstracted forms – some geometric, others suggestive of textiles or letters that together conjure words. Her surfaces are textural, and this underscores the energy in much of her work; it is physical as well as optical. Ma asks you to enter into the typography of her paintings and journey through them.

Color is often limited. In some cases, where the work is monochrome, surface subtleties require our full attention. In others, contrast is employed to create an even greater spatial effect, adding depth. There are instances where a full range of hues is employed, opening up a more interwoven sense of space. In all of the paintings, the color supports the structure and textural aspects of the works.

We see Ma as a builder-sculptor/architect. She constructs and deconstructs her letter like shapes establishing an elegant alphabet of shapes and signs.

Donate to our Annual Appeal

As we reflect on this past year, I am filled with gratitude and pride. 2025 has been landmark year for the Bridgehampton Museum — one where our vision for a more vibrant, engaged, and connected community truly came to life.

Here are just a few highlights from 2025:

  • New Exhibitions, New Conversations – Our exhibitions and programming this year brought in a 167% increase in visitors so far this year, sparking conversations and inspiring visitors of all ages. Each show reminded us that art and history are not just about the past — they are tools for understanding the present and imagining the future.
  • The Tractor Barn Comes to Life – We celebrated the opening of our newest space at the Corwith House, The Tractor Barn, transforming it into a place where history and creativity meet. This flexible new space will be home to various new events, workshops, and gatherings that bring our mission to life.
  • A Stronger Connection with Local Schools – We welcomed a new Museum Educator to our team, whose passion for teaching and collaboration is already helping us build deeper partnerships with local schools. Together, we are giving the next generation opportunities to engage with the rich history of Bridgehampton.

These achievements are just the beginning. Looking ahead, we are committed to continuing our growth as an organization — bringing you more innovative exhibitions, engaging programs, and meaningful educational experiences. But to do this, we need your support.

Your gift to the Bridgehampton Museum Annual Appeal directly fuels our ability to share history, culture, and creativity with the community. Every contribution — no matter the size — helps ensure we can sustain this momentum and keep providing the high-quality programming you’ve come to expect.

Please consider making a tax-deductible gift today. Together, we can make 2026 a year of even greater impact.
