2022 MLK Portrait Project

A Collaboration with Eleven East End High Schools


Riverhead, New York (January 17, 2022) – East End Arts & Humanities Council, Inc. presents the 2022 East End Arts MLK Portrait Project to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month.

EEA’s MLK Portrait Project is in its second year and has doubled in size. Participating high schools in- clude: Bridgehampton, Center Moriches, East Hampton, Eastport South Manor, Hampton Bays, Mattituck, Mount Sinai, Riverhead, Rocky Point, Shelter Island, and Southampton. There are twelve portraits in total, Bridgehampton has opted to do two portraits. Each portrait is a mosaic created by 16 students with 12” x 12” canvases combined to form a 4′ x 4′ finished portrait.

EEA’s virtual gallery, as well as all participating schools will host all completed mosaic portraits beginning on Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday; January 17, 2022 through mid-February.

In collaboration with the East End Food Institute at the new Riverhead’s Farmers Market at 139 Main Road, Riverhead, will display the 12 completed portraits for the community to view; Saturdays 9 AM – 1 PM, on February 19, 26, and March 5, 2022. The final showing and auction is scheduled for March 12, 2022, at East End Arts annex Gallery 11 West Main Street. Each portrait will be auctioned with all proceeds going to EEA’s Scholarship fund.

In the spirit of one of MLK’s great quotes; “unity is the great need of the hour, and if we are united we can get many of the things that we not only desire but which we justly deserve.” EEA plans to continue this unity project annually.
