2nd Annual MLK Portrait Project Begins

12 Local High Schools Signed Up for 2022

Last year’s first attempt at the MLK Portrait Project came from a flash of inspiration and turned out to have a bigger impact than expected during a time of solitude and uncertainly. Five large MLK Portrait mosaics were created from seven schools, a few even overcoming the challenge of sharing a single portrait between two schools. Participating students not only honored the great Martin Luther King Jr., but also had their artwork displayed in the EEA Main Gallery and Riverhead Town Hall, received countless articles about the students accomplishments, and brought a wonderful sense of unity between several communities.
The 2022 MLK Portrait Project begins on November 1, 2021 and is set for completion on January 10, 2022. The artworks will be displayed on EEA’s virtual gallery and in the corresponding schools January 17th to celebrate Dr. King’s birthday. The portraits will then be on public display in a location(s) to be announced from February 21st until they are auctioned off on March 4th.
Funds raised by the MLK Portrait Project auction direct support the EEA Scholarship Fund that provides art and music education to the underprivileged community and supports advancement to higher education in the arts.

What is an MLK Portrait?

Our MLK Portraits consist of 16 – 12 x 12 panels, and each participating student creates one or two panels. The panels come together as a 4 ft x 4 ft finished portrait! The students are encouraged to express themselves through the art process and can get as creative as they want as long as the image or shapes of their panel stand out, so that when put together it visually forms a portrait. Once all the panels are complete, they are assembled and strengthened for hanging.
