Dear Friend,
We completed the first phase of construction on our new Collections Storage Center at Mulford Farm and now I’m thrilled to announce that we have received a matching grant of $119,570 from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to pay for new shelving and compact mobile storage furniture to house our collection. This equipment will replace the composite wooden shelving and pallets that had been used in the former storage facility since the 1990s. We couldn’t repurpose the old furniture because composite wood contains formaldehyde, resins, and acids that can off-gas or leach from the wood, severely harming artifacts. It was obvious that completely new storage equipment was necessary for the new Collections Storage Center.
Beyond helping us steward our collection of nearly 20,000 artifacts, the new Collections Storage Center will enable the Historical Society to model long-term sustainable storage and collections care practices for other museums across Eastern Long Island. Like us, many historical organizations have struggled with adequately preserving and storing their collections!
Nearly a quarter of a million dollars may seem like a lot for metal shelving (even if it’s mobile), but the Historical Society was fortunate to lock in the price early this year. With the rising price of steel, the price of the equipment would have been significantly more expensive today.
If you’re interested in learning how you can get involved with our Campaign for Collections Stewardship to help match the Gardiner Foundation’s generosity, please email or call me at 631.324.6850, x2. I’m very grateful for your consideration and I look forward to continuing to update you on our progress.
Sincerely,
Steve Long, Executive Director

New Historical Marker at the Dominy Shops Museum
Made possible by the Pomeroy Foundation
|
|
—————————— |
|
|
Thank you to everyone, including Mayor Jerry Larsen and Village Councilmember Sandra Melendez, who attended the unveiling of the new historical marker for the Dominy Shops. We’re also grateful to David Collins and East Hampton Village’s Department of Public Works for installing both the new marker, which was made possible by the Pomeroy Foundation, and the Dominy plaque from the American Bicentennial. During the unveiling, we were especially delighted to have three generations of Dominy descendants join us who had traveled to East Hampton from Arizona, Missouri, and Colorado.
After my son saw the new historical marker, he asked me where we planned to locate the next one. If you have a suggestion for what site in East Hampton Town deserves to be recognized by the Pomeroy Foundation, please email your idea to the Historical Society.

1753 Clock Face loaned to the First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton

One of the premier artifacts in our collection – a clock face constructed in 1753 that hung in the tower of the old meetinghouse church – is now on exhibit in the sanctuary balcony of the First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton. We worked with the Church to design and build a custom mount for the clock face, which was installed by staff from BK Builder.
The congregation of First Presbyterian previously worshiped in the meetinghouse church before building the current structure at 120 Main Street in 1861. In 1871, when they tore down the previous church, which stood where Guild Hall is today, several pieces of the structure were saved. These artifacts, including the clock face, weathervane, and pulpit, are now preserved in the Historical Society’s collection.
