Dear Friend,
I’m thrilled to announce that the Dominy Shops Museum was recently awarded a historical marker by the Pomeroy Foundation. We are hosting a brief ceremony to unveil the marker on May 19 at 11 AM and I invite you to join us. In addition to the marker at the Dominy Shops, the Pomeroy Foundation has sponsored signage all over East Hampton Town. For example, you can see these distinctive yellow and blue markers at our headquarters at Clinton Academy, at Montauk’s Culloden Point commemorating the Amistad, and at the Amagansett Life-Saving Station Museum.
Applying for the historical marker was a challenge. In addition to providing the Pomeroy Foundation with historical documentation showing when and how the Dominys operated their shops, the inscription on the marker was restricted to five lines of 27 characters each (including punctuation). It was almost like writing a haiku poem! I am very grateful to Bob Hefner, Charles Keller, and Glenn Purcell for their advice on the inscription, and a huge thanks to the Village of East Hampton for approving the initial application and arranging to install the sign on Village property.
In addition to the new historical marker, we will celebrate the reinstallation of the American Bicentennial plaque (shown above) that was placed on the property almost 50 years ago to commemorate the Dominy Shops. I hope to see you on May 19 at 11 AM at the Dominy Shops Museum, 73 North Main Street in East Hampton.
Sincerely,
Steve Long, Executive Director |

Reports from the Museum Association of New York Conference

Last month, I attended the Museum Association of New York (MANY) conference in Ithaca. I am grateful to NYSCA/CNY for awarding us a professional development grant to defray the cost. This was my first time attending the MANY conference.
There were many great presentations that featured case studies from small institutions all around New York State. The Curator and Collections Roundtable was enlightening and allowed participants to discuss issues facing our institutions. I discovered that every participant was dealing with collection storage problems. I certainly sympathized with these stories since we face the same issues here, but I was glad to tell the group that we are building our new Collection Storage Center.
I finally met face-to-face with many people with whom I’ve only had email or zoom interactions. For example, I met the registrar from the NYS Museum who helped transfer ownership of the HMS Culloden cannon to the Historical Society last year. I also forged stronger connections with several folks working at other Long Island institutions. We all plan to continue building our relationships through future collaborations.
Next year’s conference will be hosted on Long Island, which will be a great opportunity for the EH Historical Society to play a bigger role in the Museum Association of New York. I look forward to continuing to represent the Historical Society. |
