THE UNEXPECTED JOY OF LEARNING AN ENDANGERED LANGUAGE

By Cass Lovett, Vogue, April 25, 2025

“On a tranquil November evening in the Hamptons, I greet Wunetu Wequai Tarrant, a linguist from the Shinnecock Indian Nation, at Guild Hall. I’ve been to the museum countless times for art openings and theatrical performances, but tonight, seated among 15 local card sharks, the experience is something else entirely. For two hours, consonants fly through the air as we play Uno in Shinnecock, a dialect of Algonquian last spoken fluently by Tarrant’s great-great-grandparents’ generation in the 1920s…”

EAST END: GUILD HALL

News 12, April 25, 2025

“Guild Hall was founded as a civic institution so it’s really part of the cultural fabric of the Hamptons. Since 1931 it has always been open to the community to use as their performing arts space or their museum. There is a real sense of ownership of Guild Hall by the people who live here,”

— said Andrea Grover.

WORKING WITH ARTISTS—2025 STUDENT ART FESTIVAL:

RAUSCHENBERG100

This fall, the Student Art Festival: Rauschenberg100 will honor the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth by joining an international museum initiative organized by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Guild Hall has paired ten public schools with ten east end artists to collaboratively delve into what Rauschenberg called the “gap between art and life,” valuing chance and collaboration in a wide range of materials, subjects, styles, and creative techniques. Learn more and view photos from recent in-school workshops by clicking the links below. Student Art Festival: Rauschenberg100 will be on view November 16, 2025 through January 4, 2026.

GUILD HALL TEEN ARTS COUNCIL:

PUPPET SHOW WITH LIZ JOYCE

The Teen Arts Council members enjoyed a wonderful few months working with Liz Joyce, puppet-master, and founder of Goat on a Boat Puppet Theater. Their creativity shone and many of them discovered a newfound love for performance and storytelling! Throughout the unit, the students explored and created finger puppets, shadow puppets, felt hand puppets, and worked toward crafting an entirely original puppet show, including story, set, and characters, which they performed on April 9 for friends, family, staff, and community members.

FUENTEOVEJUNA: EAST END

Together, we can build something big—something unprecedented—coming to Guild Hall May 16 and 17!

When we face challenges, the strength of our community is what helps us push forward and create something truly powerful. That’s exactly what Fuenteovejuna: East End represents: a bold reinterpretation of one of Spain’s most iconic works, coming to life in May 2025.

This project isn’t just theater; it’s a celebration of what unites us: justice, community, and solidarity. Created by and for our community, it highlights the values that bring us together.

WHY I AM A MEMBER OF GUILD HALL…

This flyer from 1971-72 was a membership push from Guild Hall. Obron Farber, the first quote, was in high school at the time and is now one of the Volunteers of Guild Hall in 2025!

The other testimonials remind us of how important the fabric of community is at Guild Hall and continues today and into our future.
