News from the Farm – July & August

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friend,
It has been a busy summer on the Farm!
We wrapped up seven fun weeks of Summer Farm Camp, along with several group visits, welcoming more than 300 kids to the Farm to learn through immersive, hands on experiences.
We also hosted exciting workshops, with lots more planned for the fall. Our first ever Hallockville Hootenanny was a wonderful success, with visitors dancing the afternoon away! Our Annual Gala was another highlight of the summer, where we were thrilled to announce our new Executive Director, Marianne Della Croce, who will begin in September. Stay tuned for more details next month.
We thank everyone who helped make this summer a great one and we look forward to the excitement of the fall.
On August 20th, we celebrated Hallockville, the Trubisz Family, and the Tuesday Crew at our 3rd Annual Fundraising Gala. Thank you to our sponsors, donors, host Al Martinez-Fonts, everyone who attended, and the Gala Committee, chaired by Samantha Moore, for making it a beautiful night of Honoring the Past and Building the Future of Hallockville.
—————————
Hallockville Hootenanny: Hundreds of music lovers joined us on the Farm for a free afternoon of local music! This family-friendly event brought together local vendors, food trucks, and five bands from across Long Island for an unforgettable afternoon of bluegrass, sunshine, and very good music. Thank you to everyone involved in making this a great event!
Hallockville’s Garlic Contest: Thirteen local garlic growers showcased their finest heads of garlic during our annual competition. Entries were carefully judged on appearance and flavor as our expert judges sampled the season’s harvest to select this year’s winners.
Dye Pot Demo: In collaboration with ReWild North Fork, we invited Master Gardener and plant-dyeing extraordinaire Sara Jones to share her knowledge of how to dye natural fibers using plant materials. Sara even helped dye some of our own sheep Apple’s wool using marigolds!
What is Happening in the Bee Yard?
———————–
———————————————
With the dedication and guidance of Master Beekeeper Chris Kelly and the hard work of those in our Beekeeping Program, our Bee Yard has produced more than 180 pounds of honey this year with even more expected this fall!
Chris has also invited local Mattituck High School students to not only learn in the Bee Yard, but to make a difference in the world of beekeeping. This group of dedicated young scientists has been researching worker bees that exhibit hygienic behavior. Their efforts aim to reduce reliance on synthetic chemical treatments by breeding bees that can better defend themselves against mites, which continue to devastate hives across the beekeeping world.
All the best,
