News from the Farm – May

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friend,
Spring brings a spirit of renewal to Hallockville Museum Farm, and with it come exciting new beginnings. We’re thrilled to unveil a fresh exhibit that brings untold stories of our local heritage to life based on a new book by Richard Wines, A Farm Family on Long Island’s North Fork: The Lost World of the Hallocks and Their Sound Avenue Community. You can now purchase Richard’s book along with locally made goods, unique gifts and artisan crafts at our beautifully updated Museum Shop.
With a full roster of events in June, we invite you to explore what’s new, reconnect with the past and celebrate the vibrant community that continues to grow here.
It’s back! Hallockville’s Spring Tea is famous in Hallockville circles and deservedly so. The tea and treats are delicious, and the setting in our historical Naugles Barn is beautiful.
This year’s speaker is professor and former board member Susan Babkes who will explore the role of women in the American Revolution. Definitely a tea-worthy subject!
Out and About
Thank you to everyone who came to “A Farm Family on Long Island’s North Fork” presentation given by Board Member Richard Wines at Hallock State Park.
After the presentation, attendees viewed the new exhibit based on the book at the Hudson-Sydlowski House.
You can view the exhibit from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
The exhibit was made possible by a grant from Suffolk County.
It goes without saying that traditional crafts are an important part of Hallockville and have been for a long time.
It was a pleasure to have Instructor Diane Schwindt lead a workshop on Penny Rugs. What colorful creations!
Diane wears many hats including historic cook. Her next workshop in July is sure to be popular, “Stirring Up History: Early Ice Cream Making, Victorian Ice Cream Molds.” For more information, head here: Stirring Up History!
Our beekeeping program is in full swing. So far there have been hive split, hive build and hive health workshops and most recently, the first of the season’s hive inspections under the watchful eye of Master Beekeeper Chris Kelly.
You can still participate in this year’s program. To find out more and to register. click here: Hallockville’s Beekeeping Program.
Another Fleece & Fiber Festival is in the books. Thank you to all who attended, and a huge thanks to the vendors, demonstrators and volunteers who helped to make the event a fun one. It was a lovely sunny day.
————————
It has been a busy month as we have welcomed hundreds of students from local schools to discover how different life was here at Hallockville in the 1800s compared to how we live today. At our field trips, students tour the Homestead and the Homestead Barn where they dig for potatoes, meet our animals, learn about growing their own food (even grinding corn to feed our chickens) and get their hands wet by doing laundry “like in the olden days,” one of their favorite activities.
We look forward to welcoming more schools in the next few weeks. Our mission is “to take Long Island back to its family farming roots and explore their relevance today,” and we feel one of the best ways to do so is by sharing the past with future generations.
We are very grateful to our volunteers for helping with the school visits. If you’d like to be a field trip volunteer, click the link below. No prior experience needed. Will train.
Meet Our New Museum Associate Lilly
Lillian Cowburn has a bachelor’s degree in plant science and a passion for agriculture education. She believes it’s important for everyone to learn where their food comes from and the steps it takes to get that food on our plates.
Lilly is originally from the suburbs of Syracuse, New York and moved to the North Fork in 2022. Outside of work you can find her crocheting, sewing, birding and caring for her small flock of show chickens. Lilly’s favorite thing about working at Hallockville is being able to learn about the extensive history of the people and farmers who have lived here and sharing this history and the beauty of the farm with all those that stop by.
We are very excited and grateful for the work that has been done for the Naugles Barn Adaptive Reuse Project. It has been a pleasure working with Heidtmann & Sons, and we appreciate the assistance of the Town of Riverhead’s Architectural Review Board and Landmarks Preservation Commission to guide the historical authenticity of the restoration. We continue to be grateful to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) for the matching grant we received in 2023.
We are having a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at the Naugles Barn on Thursday, June 26 beginning at 4 p.m. followed by music by The Old Time Jam. Come join the celebration!
And we hope you have marked your calendar for our 50th Anniversary Gala on August 21 at Giorgio’s Baiting Hollow in honor of Alice and Jack Van de Wetering. For ticket, sponsorship and donation information, click here: 50th Anniversary Gala.
