News from the Farm – October

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friend,
As autumn settles over the North Fork, Hallockville is filled with the traditions of the season. From nature programs and crafts workshops to musical events and more, the fall is a wonderful time to experience the beauty and heritage of our farm community.
In this issue, we’re sharing some moments from our last event, details on what’s ahead, and a few things you won’t want to miss.
Out and About
This year’s Country Fair was such a wonderful event, and we are very thankful to all of our visitors, dedicated volunteers, talented demonstrators, craftspeople, musicians, vendors, and local businesses.
We are also grateful to our neighbors at the Long Island Antique Power Association for joining in the fun, and to the media partners who helped spread the word far and wide.
A very special thank you to the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning for the Omnibus Grant, which helps make this community tradition possible.
The Natural Secrets of Long Island
You’re invited to “The Natural Secrets of Long Island,” a special evening presentation with acclaimed naturalist John Turner on Thursday, October 23 at 6:30 PM in the historic Naugles Barn.
In this engaging program, Turner will explore the remarkable plants, animals, and landscapes that make Long Island unique — from coastal habitats and forests to the hidden wonders of our own backyards.
An environmental educator and advocate for nearly 50 years, Turner has delivered hundreds of talks and nature walks, written for publications such as Defenders, Bird Watcher’s Digest, and The Conservationist, and authored Exploring the Other Island: A Seasonal Nature Guide to Long Island. A co-founder of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, he now serves as Senior Policy Advisor to the Seatuck Environmental Association.
This event is free, but registration is requested at The Natural Secrets of Long Island presentation.
Jam Workshop
Imagine a world without freezers, refrigerators, and grocery stores. This was the reality for the Hallocks before electricity was brought to the Homestead in the mid-1900s. Folks used many techniques to preserve their summer harvests, including making and canning jam.
Gabi Spielmann will take you through the process of canning, from berry to shelf-stable jam, in this hands-on workshop. You will leave with your very own jar of berry jam and the knowledge to continue to make preserves in your home kitchen.
November 1, 1 – 4 PM at the Hudson-Sydlowski House. Class fee: $25 members and $30 nonmembers. Register here: Jam Making Workshop
