Dear friends and family,

Even if it will be a while before we can be close to one another, in real space, we are nearer to the moment that we can get closer through art, so to speak.

Governor Baker just released his road map for re-opening the Commonwealth. At MASS MoCA we’re deep into our plans for welcoming you back safely, in ways that will take full advantage of our vast, airy galleries and beautiful outdoor courtyards and fields. Ann Hamilton calls the experience of being with others in the presence of art “being together, alone,” with art binding us together in a shared experience…one by one. MASS MoCA offers art — and space for social distancing — by the acre. We’ll be ready to have you back with all the health-conscious procedures you’d expect, when the right time comes. That time is getting closer.

We’re also getting closer to winning a $250,000 challenge grant, which we need for the urgent reasons you can find here in nitty-gritty detail.

I hope you can help, because that grant and the matching funds it will leverage are vital. Please donate whatever you’re able to our COVID-19 Relief Fund, or join or renew early as a member (or order a gift from our newly expanded online retail store). Every single dollar matters.

To those who have already contributed, to those who are considering a COVID-19 relief gift today, and to those who would like to pitch in but simply cannot right now … indeed, to every single one of you, thank you for thinking of us.

Believe me, we are thinking of you, and wishing you and your families well. We cannot wait to have you all back, re-gathering together around the extraordinary acts of creativity that define MASS MoCA.

Joseph Thompson

P.S. Here’s a gift from our friends at Wilco, a lovely, timely new song unveiled on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, with a nice MASS MoCA shout out.
