Welcome to the 12th issue of our community newsletter—created to bring together, in one convenient place, all the news of what’s going on around Montauk—to help keep our community informed, connected, and safe. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR THE VIRTUAL MONTAUK SWIM CHALLENGE

Registration is now open online for our 2020 Swim Challenge! This fundraiser for the Playhouse Foundation’s campaign to build an Aquatic Center will be held as a virtual event, from Aug. 15-22. Participants will choose a distance category (1/2 mile, 1 mile, and 5K), line up their sponsors and log their results online. Swimmers of all ages are encouraged to participate—this is an especially great summer activity for kids and families! Click here to register online. The Montauk Public School held a safe, outdoor graduation ceremony on July 1st for the the 8th grade class of 39 students. Congratulations to all—as well as to the Montauk students who graduated from East Hampton High School in June!

CAMP SOULGROW RETURNS FOR SUMMER 2020

The nonprofit Camp Soulgrow is back in Montauk for their 7th summer with a schedule of enriching, self-esteem building, communal workshops for children. They shared that, “We will be operating our workshops for 6 children at a time, using the utmost precaution and keeping the safety of the children and community our main priority.” Learn more

CALL FOR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

East End Cares has put out a call for volunteer “buddies” to help our vulnerable neighbors with shopping and errands. As they note, “Summer is officially here, but the virus has not gone on vacation.” If you have some time and would like to help, serving as a volunteer buddy is a wonderful way to help keep someone safe and to help them feel less alone. TONY CARAMANICO | Earlier this year, iconic Montauk surfer Tony Caramanico was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. What does he love about surfing? “Its sense of freedom… it’s athletic, but soulful. PAT DEROSA | He’s 98 years-old and still rocking! Montauk’s beloved legendary musician Pat DeRosa has been keeping his spirits up these last few months with regular exercise and regular jam sessions on his sax, at home with his equally musical family—daughter Patricia and granddaughter Nicole.
