NY Harbor School students and teachers work with local partner, Kate Rossi-Snook

to explore oyster reef biodiversity at Mashomack.

From Governor’s Island to Shelter Island
Fall programming is in full swing at Mashomack, as we welcome schools, community partners, and the public to our preserve. Nine students from Governor’s Island based New York Harbor School joined us for a multi-day stay in early October. They dove into studying coastal issues including living shorelines, oyster habitat and the local marine economy. Students got their hands dirty and feet wet as they met with local shellfish partner Kate Rossi-Snook from Cornell Cooperative Extension and learned about oyster restoration work while exploring the coastal habitats of Mashomack. This amazing field experience served as valuable hands-on experience, as they launched into the final year of their three-year course in Marine Affairs, Policy and Advocacy.
