Join Glen Hansen for an immersive, two-part live demonstration and lecture. This program offers a rare look into the meticulous “Old World” methods used by the masters to create luminous, atmospheric works of art. Participants will observe Glen working on several active paintings in his studio throughout the demo. This is a unique opportunity to see professional techniques applied in real-time and to understand how historical mediums can be integrated into contemporary practice.
Program Schedule
-
Session 1: The Foundation (11 am – 12:30 pm) Learn the critical role of the underpainting (ground) in establishing a successful composition. Glen will demonstrate how to build an atmosphere from the bottom up, focusing specifically on the delicate art of sky gradations and cloud formations.
-
Intermission (12:30 pm – 1 pm)
-
Session 2: The Alchemy of Glazing (1 pm – 2:30 pm) Step back in time to explore the techniques of the Old Masters. This session dives deep into the use of Maroger medium, a re-discovered formula from the school of Peter Paul Rubens. Glen will also explore the iconic glazing styles of Maxfield Parrish, showing how multiple layers of transparent color can create unparalleled depth and brilliance.
