Valentine’s Day Tintype Portraits

by Greg Shea

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a timeless keepsake.

Schedule a tintype portrait session on February 14 with award-winning Connecticut artist, photographer, and museum professional Greg Shea. Greg and his portable photo studio will be at the Custom House Maritime Museum on February 14 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Have a portrait made of yourself, your partner, your family, or just the two of you together—an unforgettable Valentine’s Day memento.

Tintypes are one-of-a-kind, handcrafted photographic images created from pure silver on black lacquered metal plates. Greg uses the wet plate collodion process, invented in England by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851. With proper care, these remarkable images can last for hundreds of years.

If you would like to schedule a 20-minute session in this historic art form, please sign up at

https://events.humanitix.com/tintype-portrait.

Portrait pricing is as follows:

  • 8 x 10 tintype (per plate): $125
  • 5 x 7 tintype (per plate): $75
  • 4 x 5 tintype (per plate): $50

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the museum.

Please allow approximately 20 minutes for your session. Tintypes will not be ready the same day; finished plates may be picked up at the museum about one week after the event. Edited digital scans will also be provided free of charge for personal, non-commercial use.

An exhibition of Greg Shea’s tintype portraits also will be on view February 8 through March 29, with an Artist’s Talk on January 13 at 6:30 pm, at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank Street, New London, CT.
