The Trust is pleased to host author and poet, Scott Chaskey for a conversation, reading, and book signing as he releases his newest book of poetry and prose this summer! The former director of the Trust’s Quail Hill Farm, Scott has spent decades tending daily to the earth. Join us to listen as he shares the evolution of his perspective as a farmer and as a poet, and reads from his latest work. Books will be available for purchase and signing, refreshments will be provided.

Bridge Gardens 

Talented local artist Barbara Thomas returns to lead our series of art classes. Beginner to experienced artists age 15+ will learn techniques to capture the natural beauty of the garden. Using watercolor gouache, you will learn how to capture light and shadow, color, atmosphere, and distance as well as tricks for painting textures, shapes and all things gardens. Supply list will be provided upon prepaid registration.

Natural History of Broad Cove

Nature Paddle

Friday, July 14, 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Bring your own kayak for a guided paddle of the waters off Broad Cove, a pristine 100-acre woodland on Flanders Bay. This tour will focus on the natural history and story of this property, one of the largest former duck farms from the early 1900s. Led by local birders Nancy Gilbert and Richard Wines, you’ll explore the western shoreline up through Terry’s Creek as well as the areas once inhabited by ducks. Its recent conservation by the Peconic Land Trust protects the fragile Peconic Estuary ecosystem and will soon be accessible for woodland trail exploration.

Halsey, President of the Trust, to hear how this community gem was conserved in 1986 and became a resource for the Southold community for generations to come. Landscape Alternatives to Protect Coastal Ponds

Our coastal ponds are home to a myriad of flora and fauna but many have become polluted. From road runoff due to heavy rains, to improper landscape practices, to invasive plants, toxins are filtering into these beautiful natural areas causing dangerous algal blooms. You can help! Join us for a conversation with Matt Daly of MGD Horticulture and Dr. Bruce Horwith, a natural resource scientist and advisor to the Trust, to learn what you can do to create landscape buffers that help filter toxins from our wetlands. Learn about the transformations happening at Trust properties adjoining Georgica Pond and Sagg Pond and get tips on things you can do to make a difference.
