————————–
Dear Friends,

I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer.  The images above were taken earlier this month in the historic garden at Joseph Lloyd Manor which was recently restored with support from generous donors, including the Margaret Sullivan Fund.  This beautiful restoration was planned and realized by the very talented, local gardener Anna Dam.   Anna returned many of the original plants to the garden and restored the original brick paths. I hope you’ll stop by and enjoy the garden and its sweeping views of Lloyd Harbor.

Our September calendar is filled with exciting events, outlined below, and our programs continue well into the Fall. I am thrilled to share with you an overview of what’s on the schedule, including the opening of our stunning upcoming exhibition: Making a Name for Himself: The Life and Art of F. Edwin Church.

————————–

This show will explore 20th-century portrait and landscape artist F. Edwin Church, a painter whose captivating work is rooted in the traditions of Impressionism and Japonisme, yet still reflects modern life early in the last century.  Church chose to spend the latter part of his life on Long Island’s North Shore, which is home to Preservation Long Island.  This exhibition reflects our commitment to exploring the intersection of art, culture, and place.  By highlighting Church’s work, we hope visitors will gain a renewed appreciation for the North Shore’s extraordinary artistic heritage. F. Edwin Church.

The exhibition will be open to the public from September 19 to December 21, 2025 and showcases a range of artworks, photographs, and ephemera spanning Church’s career, including works from his life abroad and on Long Island.

Great thanks go to Jan Wiley, Director of the F. Edwin Church Catalogue Raisonné Project, for her deep scholarship and unwavering commitment to Church’s legacy; Lauren Brincat, PLI’s Chief Curator and Director of Collections, for her curatorial insight and collaborative efforts; and Emily Werner, PLI’s Guest Curator, whose interpretive work and thoughtful vision brought this exhibition to life.

An Evening with Samuel G. White
The Architect as Client: Stanford White at “Box Hill”
Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.

In October, we are honored to welcome Samuel G. White for an evening discussion about the history of “Box Hill,” the estate in Saint James that Stanford and Bessie White purchased shortly after their marriage.

Samuel G. White, FAIA is the author of four books on the work of Stanford White and McKim, Mead & White, most recently Stanford White in Detail, plus Nice House, a survey of recent, modest, architect-designed houses. He is a great-grandson of Stanford White and a founding partner of PBDW Architects.

——————

Between 1884 and 1906, Stanford White directed a nearly continuous program of additions, renovations, and landscaping at “Box Hill.” While Bessie saw “Box Hill” as a gathering place for family and friends, White and his partners treated “Box Hill” as a laboratory for their ideas, enlarging the structure from a vernacular farmhouse to a highly developed essay on country house architecture and landscape design.

Sam White will discuss the history of “Box Hill” as a process reflecting Stanford White’s ambitions, ideals, and opportunities while highlighting his dual role as both architect and client.

We are pleased to share with you a fascinating article written by Sarah Egan, our Curatorial Intern who is a current master’s student at the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan.  Sarah spent this summer researching objects in Preservation Long Island’s collection, including this intriguing cast-iron birdhouse, which is an exact replica of a Victorian-Era house that is still standing in Roslyn Harbor.  Click HERE to read the article.
