Dear Friends,

As the holiday season approaches we wish to express our gratitude for your support during another challenging year. We are thankful that you continued to remain connected with us through our expanded virtual programs and that many of you were able to participate when we ventured into on-site events and educational activities when it was safe to do so.

We enjoyed seeing familiar and new faces in our gallery when we launched the Facing Slavery: Reframing the Lloyd Family Portraits exhibition and at our Celebration of Modernism Restored event a few weeks ago at the TWA Flight Center. We are also grateful for the enthusiastic response to the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Virtual Event Series that showcased eight partners selected to receive our technical and advisory services as they work to preserve at-risk historic sites in their communities.

We are pleased to share the image above of the watercolor Clinton Smith Cottage that was recently given to us as a long-term loan from the Fine Arts Collection of the U.S. General Services Administration New Deal Art Project. The view looks down Valley Road (Community Drive) in what is today Manhasset. The area was part of Success, an early community of free Blacks and Indigenous Matinecocks that was established in the 1820s following the abolition of slavery in New York State in 1827.

Click HERE for more information about the artist, Clinton Smith Cottage, and the Success community provided by our Curator, Lauren Brincat.

Thank you once again for helping us make a difference in the way people understand their place in history. We wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday.
