BUILDING CULTURE: ARCHITECTURE AS APPARATUS AND SOCIAL PROCESS
Presented in partnership with Unit 25: Building Culture (Spitzer School of Architecture)

This pedagogical experiment encouraged students to use a range of research techniques to explore how the built environment influences social and economic life. Architectural investigations and drawing are merged with interviews and archives to understand the matrix of institutions, cultural practices, and strategies that have been deployed in Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona, and Flushing. The 12 exhibited projects look at the potential of creativity in transforming the lives of Queens residents.

Este experimento pedagógico animaba a lxs estudiantes a utilizar diversas técnicas de investigación para explorar cómo influye el entorno urbano en la vida social y económica. Se combinan investigaciones y bocetos arquitectónicos para comprender de las instituciones, prácticas culturales y estrategias que se han utilizado en Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, Corona y Flushing. Los 12 proyectos expuestos se centran en el potencial que tiene la creatividad para transformar la vida de lxs residentes de Queens.

FLAG-MAKING FOR COLLECTIVE CARE
Presented as part of Art As Social Action: 10 Years of Social Practice Queens

Artist, educator, and SPQ alum Jeff Kasper will lead a creative workshop based on his series of prototypes for white flags. This Zoom event will involve story sharing through short digital collage, visual brainstorming, and wellness-focused participatory design activities. Flag-Making for Collective Care is a multi-generational and collaborative workshop, grounded in queer/disability justice principles.

Jeff Kasper, artista, educador y alumno de SPQ, organiza un taller creativo basado en su serie prototypes for white flags (“prototipos para banderas blancas”). En este evento de Zoom incluiremos historias que se comparten a través de breves collages digitales, lluvias de ideas visuales y actividades de diseño participativo que se centran en el bienestar. Flag-Making for Collective Care es un taller colaborativo y multigeneracional que se basa en principios de justicia con la comunidad queer y con la discapacidad.
