HEATHER HART: ORACLE OF THE TWELVE TENSES
After the Plaster Foundation, or, “Where can we live?”
PERFORMANCE: Katrina Reid, Sub(Urban) Archives, Saturday, November 21 2020, 3:00pm–4:00pm
——–

As part of our current exhibition After the Plaster Foundation, or, “Where can we live?”Heather Hart presents Oracle of the Twelve Tenses, 2020, a life-sized interactive rooftop that draws on the artist’s own personal history—her father was a carpenter—and considers African-American histories of self-determination and refuge. Like all of Hart’s structures, this rooftop can be walked on, sat on, and used as a venue for performances.This Saturday, November 21 at 3:00pm, dancer and performing artist Katrina Reid will present a movement and sound-based activation of the rooftop titled Sub(Urban) Archives. The performance invites us to consider the interplay between memory and migration. Register here to attend in-person at Queens Museum or tune in from home via online livestream. Plus, don’t miss this excerpt from Stefano Harney and Fred Moten’s The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning and Black Study, selected by Hart as part of the exhibition’s online publication.

QUEENS SPOTLIGHT: LETICIA OCHOA
@StreetVendorProject
——–

We spoke to Street Vendor Project‘s (SVP) Queens Organizer about the member-led organization’s efforts to advocate for street vendors’ rights and working conditions. Founded in 2001, SVP has participated in many legal actions defending and protecting vendors against false arrests, property seizure, and fines. Since the beginning of the pandemic, street vendors have been struggling with food insecurity, financial insecurity, and housing insecurity. Leticia explains that most street vendors have been excluded from all forms of COVID-19 relief, either because of their immigration status or the informal nature of their work. To address these issues, SVP’s Street Vendor Covid-19 Emergency Fund has raised close to $150,000 to support as many of the 2,000 members of Street Vendor Project with cash assistance.
