Dear Friends of QWR,
We hope you all have been well and are managing during these complicated times. I would like to update you on recent happenings at the Refuge.
On June 9th we received guidelines from NYS to operate summer camp this year. We look forward to providing children with a safe and healthy opportunity for outdoor exploration, learning and fun. The group sizes are limited to 10 campers, and we are adding a few more sessions in the hope of accommodating more children.
The Nature Center remains closed and when Long Island enters phase 4, we will determine if it is best to reopen the building to the public on weekends. The center will be closed Monday through Friday during our summer camp programs in order to provide a safe and clean indoor space, should our campers need to come indoors. We are offering fun programs virtually, as well as some in person social distance programs.
As you know, our Wild Night for Wildlife fundraiser has been cancelled, we are hoping to raise an equal amount of funds to meet our operating budget for 2020. We are asking generous folks like yourself to please consider making a donation to support the Refuge, if you are able.
Nature Trails remain open daily from sunrise to sunset, and we see lots of folks finding solace and enjoyment in nature during their visits. The animals are well, and we have witnessed a coincidental increase in crows since Jake the crow has moved into one of our enclosures. He seems to have regular communications with his buddies outside of his cage, and we find unusual gifts in Jake’s cage.
We hope you come by to enjoy the sanctuary soon, and sign up for one of our programs.
Let us know how you are doing. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and check our website for any updates.
We appreciate your support throughout the years.
Wishing you a fun and healthy summer,
Michael J. Nelson
