followed by a Q&A with director Rob Marshall and 3rd floor exhibition

Sag Harbor Cinema will host a screening of Thoroughly Modern Millie as the second event in the yearlong retrospective, ‘The World of Julie Andrews.’ The film will be followed by a Q&A with director Rob Marshall, whose widely acclaimed films include Chicago and Mary Poppins Returns.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie is a joyous celebration of the movie musical at the close of the genre’s Golden Age — ignited by the gorgeous & perfectly stylized performance of our divine Julie!” says Marshall.

Scored by Elmer Bernstein (it was his only Academy Award), with songs arranged by André Previn, the film was a big box office success at the time of its release and has since become a hit Broadway musical. Producer Ross Hunter originally intended to bring The Boy Friend to the screen with Miss Andrews, who would have been reprising the role she played in her Broadway debut, but the rights were too cost prohibitive. Instead, the film was adapted from the 1956 British musical, Chrysanthemum, which follows the misadventures of a young woman intent on marrying her rich boss.

A Broadway dancer and choreographer before becoming a director, Rob Marshall was responsible for the choreography of the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria, starring Miss Andrews. Among his other better known films are Into The Woods (2014), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), and Annie (1990). He is the director of the forthcoming live action version of the Disney classic The Little Mermaid.

“We are thrilled that Rob Marshall is joining us in our celebration of Julie Andrews. His passion and deep knowledge of the musical genre makes him the ideal presenter for Thoroughly Modern Millie,” says Sag Harbor Cinema’s Founding Artistic Director Giulia D’Agnolo Vallan, who will moderate the Q&A.

The screening will coincide with the opening of a gallery show on the cinema’s 3rd floor, featuring original sketches and models by Mary Poppins design consultant Tony Walton, behind the scenes photographs, and other artifacts of Walton’s collaborations with Julie Andrews.

Tickets for the screening will be available

A musical spoof set during the Roaring Twenties, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE stars Julie Andrews as Millie Dillmount, an innocent country girl who moves to New York to follow her dreams of becoming a modern and finding a husband along the way. She becomes the secretary to the rich and handsome Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), befriends Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore) at their boarding house, and finds herself in a love triangle with charming paperclip salesman Jimmy (James Fox). In the end, it takes eccentric and fabulous Muzzy (Carol Channing, in an Oscar®-nominated role) to set things right in the hit George Roy Hill film loosely adapted from the 1956 musical “Chrysanthemum” by Robin Chancellor.
