The Liliane Questel Recital Series is thrilled to welcome pianist Tian Tang in recital on Saturday, November 1, at 6:00 pm. An artist of rare poise and imagination, Tian is known for programs that are thematically woven, intellectually curated, and delivered with remarkable intimacy and eloquence. Her performances have been praised for “an air of delicacy and grace, a sound that stirs the soul, and a singular artistic allure” (Wangchao News), and for music “flowing with the ease of water and striking the heartstrings; a vibrant musical feast of the highest artistry” (Taizhou Evening News).
The evening’s program traces a luminous arc through the piano literature — the beloved lyricism of Schubert and the shimmering impressionism of Debussy, the ultra-romantic fervor of Scriabin, and the elegant, unmistakably French voice of Poulenc — a composer especially cherished by the series ’founder, Liliane Questel. The program also features Chu Wanghua’s Jasmine Flower Fantasia (2002), a contemporary re-imagining of one of China’s most iconic melodies.

Concert Pianist Tian Tang
—————–
An active concert pianist, Tian Tang projects a musical vision that is personal, immersive, and authentic. Her recital work often incorporates poetry, painting, storytelling, and visual media; her signature initiative, Tian’s Musical Voyages, is a multimedia concert series bringing these worlds together. She is also curator of ARIARTS Salon Series, an interdisciplinary forum for conversation across the arts.
A Doctor of Musical Arts candidate at Northwestern University (studying with James Giles, Jose Ramon Mendez, and Marcia Bosits), Tian teaches academic courses and studio there, and previously earned her Master’s from Northwestern with Program Honors and her Bachelor’s from the San Francisco Conservatory. She is the founder of the Interactive Piano Workshop, a pedagogical project centered on collaborative, improvisatory learning, and she is recognized for her outreach and cultural work as an Honorary Member of the Taizhou Musicians Association.
Tian is a laureate of numerous competitions, including first prizes at the Weatherford (2022), Paderewski (2020), Memphis (2019), Luminarts Fellowship (2018), and Thaviu-Isaac (2018) competitions, and winner of the Northwestern Concerto & Aria Competition (2017). Her performances have taken her to the United States, Italy, Spain, Georgia, and across China; she is a regular guest on Taizhou Music Radio and a dedicated advocate for volunteer performance in underserved communities.
Beyond the stage, Tian writes poetry and prose, paints, photographs, hikes, sails, skis, and finds creative renewal in nature. Her current writings — A Cliffside Tree: Poems in Musical Refraction and Remnants and Dandelions (2020–2025)— reflect on sound, time, and memory.
