Founded in 1879 as St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea and renamed St. Andrew’s Dune Church in 1884, the building that would become the church was originally built in 1851 as a Life-Saving Service Station. The building was saved by church founders T. Gaillard Thomas, William S. Hoyt, C. Wyllys Betts, Frederic H. Betts, and Albert H. Buck.
In 1938, the Long Island Express hurricane nearly wiped out the church building. Pews and an organ were washed into Lake Agawam and stained-glass windows including some Tiffanys were destroyed.
Incorporated under the laws of New York State as a free church in which no pews can be rented, Saint Andrew’s Dune Church remains an ecumenical church where all Christians are welcome.
