FROM THE MUSEUM COLLECTION
This wooden mug which reads “Prospect 1904” was perhaps a memento from a summer’s stay at the Prospect House, which was – along with the Manhanset House – one of the two major hotels on Shelter Island and the social center of the Heights in those days. Visitors would come out from the city and beyond to spend their days boating in the harbor, playing croquet on the lawn, and golfing on the green. At night, people would waltz to live music and dine in the cool evening air – maybe this mug accompanied one of those meals!
This mug was donated to the Historical Society in 1986 by Alma Ryder.
