Happy (early) Earth Day!

Posted April 19, 2021.

These samples of Shelter Island “sea mosses” are part of
Harriet Elizabeth Phelps’ collection from 1889.
The first page of the book includes a poem that Phelps wrote:

Call us not weeds, we are flowers of the sea.

Beautiful, fair, and bright-tinted are we.

Quite independent of sunshine and showers,

Call us not weeds, we are Ocean’s gay flowers.
