“It seems appropriate to include a tapestry with a nautical theme on an island such as Shelter Island. I had been intrigued by signal flags for some time, and in this case, I was playing with writing words with signal flags. I made this piece with eight letters and it reads, ‘book arts.’ I find that the composition of the colors and designs is fun to look at, and then the fact that they also have a meaning that doesn’t relate exactly to sailing. I think everybody is interested in books and art, so I thought this was one fun thing to put together.” ~Helena Hernmarck
