The past few months have been history in the making: all at once fascinating, heartbreaking, unsettling, frightening and very likely a significant jolt to our perspective for some time to come. I know that all of us, connected together in our love for this tiny island, share a heartfelt sympathy for the many people across the world that have been affected by this pandemic.

During this time of isolation and uncertainty, our staff has been working remotely to provide online content, shared from our archives, in hopes of offering the members of our community with a momentary distraction, a contextual insight, or even a wistful smile while remaining true to our mission. In turn, your positive feedback has kept us going and we are grateful for it.

Given the extraordinary challenges of this time, we resisted sending our usual appeals for support, understanding that the needs of essential infrastructure and front line organizations were, of necessity, the primary focus we all shared. In the same vein, and after much discussion, we have decided to cancel all of our summer programs and events this season.

We are also passionate in our belief that preserving our cultural institutions has never been more important. While the new History Center remains closed, expenses for basic essentials such as climate control and security continue to mount.

Please consider making a donation to help ensure that the Shelter Island Historical Society can cover these expenses and continue to function as a cultural hub of our island for years to come.

Your timely support is greatly appreciated.
