Voices from the Vault: Whaling

Martha Pichey was born in a small Connecticut town that felt a million miles away from a big city. She graduated from Syracuse University, and began her publishing career at Scholastic and Travel & Leisure. Then she met an Englishman in New York, and they moved to London where they raised three sons. She continued her career as a freelancer, and gained a Masters in Screenwriting.

Now back in New York City, she is a proud member of both the Beehive Collective and the Playwrights/Directors Workshop at the Actors Studio.  She has been a resident at SPACE on Ryder Farm and was a Writing Fellow with Athena Theatre for 2018.

Martha’s first play, ASHES & INK, will be produced in 2020 by women’s theater company Nora’s Playhouse.

“This book transports you to a time when whalers roamed the streets between journeys, shipbuilders worked in the harbors, captains charted their expeditions, and whaleship masts seem to pierce the clouds in Long Island’s pursuit of the largest creatures in the world.”
