Happy February Slow Food Family!
2025 is off to a great start! In January, we rolled up our sleeves and kicked-off the year at our Annual Strategic Planning Session. Board members spent an inspiring day (with the Peconic Bay as our backdrop) focused on our goals for the year ahead. And this month, we co-hosted Cab Franc Forward, a new initiative to celebrate and bring awareness to the predominate red grape grown in New York State and on the East End. We also partnered with the Shinnecock Nation to provide loaves of bread from our Flour Power home bakers for their annual Mid-Winter Social.
It may seem quiet, but we are busy planning our events for this year – some tried-and-true that have become annual traditions and others will be new ways to connect to our incredible SFEE community with the people who nurture and provide our local bounty. Stay tuned for great things to come this year!

Cab Franc Forward Inaugural Event

We had so much fun at the Cab Franc Forward event on February 4th in NYC. Did you know that NYS has seven recognized wine regions? From the Finger Lakes to Long Island, NYS grows a wide variety of grapes, but our terroir is especially well-suited to growing Cab Franc, a red grape noted for its elegance, complexity and versatility. It has become the most widely planted and sought after red wine grape in NYS with almost 638 acres grown here.
SFEE is proud to help spread the word about this robust red grape and the importance of wine making to our state and East End economy. Over the last two years we have begun to recognize local winemakers with our Snail of Approval awards for soil practices, fair business models and community engagement. Macari Vineyards, Channing Daughters and Bedell Cellars have received our first SOA awards for winemakers.
We are happy to report that the East End was well represented at the tasting event with: Bedell Cellars, Bridge Lane Wine, Clovis Point Wines, Onabay Vineyards, Macari Vineyards, McCall Wines, Old Sound Vineyards, Paumanok Vineyards, Raphael Vineyards, RGNY, Roanoke Vineyards, Suhru & Lieb Vineyards, and Wolffer Estate Vineyard. Cheers to all the winemakers for creating a wide range of delicious wines with Cab Franc grapes, we hope our followers check out these wineries to taste for themselves. For more information about local wines, check out LI Wine Country.
To celebrate the night and encourage exploring the East End, we put together an East End Weekend Escape raffle that included Cab Franc wines, a stay at the Harvest Inn, dining at Noah’s Restaurant and at Main Road Biscuit Co. and handcrafted Disset Chocolates. Thank you to these amazing local businesses for your donations and congrats to the lucky winner!

Flour Power Mid-Winter Bake
|
|
For their mid-winter social, our Flour Power bakers turned on ovens to share home baked loaves and love to help the Shinnecock Nation celebrate their Mid-Winter Potluck Social. For thousands of years, this indigenous community has honored and farmed the lands and waters of the East End of Long Island. It’s heartwarming that our power bakes make it easier for us to connect with our neighbors and support our mission of bringing communities together through food.
Thanks to all of our bakers, and to the Shinnecock team, especially Adrienne Terry, for organizing.
If you want to be part of our Flour Power team or sponsor an upcoming event, send us an email at slowfoodeastend@gmail.com.

Yes, it’s winter and most farm stands are closed, but you can and absolutely should still enjoy local bounty. Here are a few our of favorite winter recommendations: |
|
|
Fresh Local Oysters
We know its easy to enjoy local oysters all year, but winter is historically best for oyster-eating and we encourage you to support our local oyster farmers, many of whom harvest straight through the winter.
- Peconic Gold Oysters – Cutchogue, check out their always-open self-service hut on the North Road. Oysters are sold by the 2 dozen; tools available too.
- West Robins Oysters – Southampton, Friday pick-ups, or order online and have it shipped to you overnight.

2025 CSA SIGN-UPS ARE OPEN
CSA’s are our local farms best business practice for a sustainable marketplace. Start thinking about selecting one (or more) that best suits your needs. Investing early in a CSA supports farmers to buy the supplies, seeds, soil amendments, tools, and to train and retain staff needed to have a successful season. CSA’s are a great way to get involved in your community and have farm fresh produce year-round. Here’s a few of our faves:
