Introducing Flour Power

Slow Food East End’s community powered bakery!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bake with Us on Sunday, April 18, 6 – 7:15 p.m.
——————
Join SFEE board member and baker, David Chaffin, for our first Flour Power demo to watch him bake his own recipe for whole wheat bread.
————
The program encourages members of the community to bake four loaves of bread. Keep one for themselves, the other three are donated to the food insecure.
————
Our next email will tell you about David, who from 1998 to 2017 was the production manager/head bread baker at Amy’s Bread.
Last year we were able to give grants to food producers affected by the pandemic. We also donated to food pantries from Riverhead to Greenport and Montauk. What’s next?
————
This year, our chair, Pennie Schwartz, wanted to include more of the community in our work: the result is Feed the Forks. Our first effort: Flour Power. It’s Free!
————
Pennie was inspired by a very successful program in Seattle called Community Loaves: They give community members a recipe (or they use their own), who bake four loaves, keep one for themselves and donate the remaining three to food pantries. Here, SFEE will handle distribution.
————
“I thought this was a project we could make
our own,” says Pennie,
“and actively involve our members to create the
smell, feel and taste of bread,
which nourishes the body and soul.”
