SFEE is continuing to support local food pantries through donations made possible by you. For every dollar donated, Slow Food matches the amount and uses it to enable local organizations to feed people in need. We committed to donate $15,000 to food pantries on the East End. You can donate to all the pantries too!

According to Cathryn O’Leary-Andrejack, Director of Parish Social Ministry, the number of people served is still well above the average. Before the pandemic, 200-250 families made use of the pantry which rose to over 900 during the height. Now that number is 400-450 but could well rise again as evictions and loss of benefits become more widespread. She goes on to say that in the current environment “everything is hard and life has become so complicated–feeding one’s family shouldn’t be.” The pantry was a choice pantry but now, by necessity, food is pre-packaged and ready for pick up. Food packages contain ingredients for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a family of four. The focus is to offer healthier food options and to provide some education on menu planning and healthy choices along the way. Most food is sourced through Long Island Cares and local supermarkets and recently included fresh chicken, eggs and produce . The goal is to address the humanity of individuals by providing food that is not only nutritious but that they will look forward to bringing into their home. As a final note, she adds that “where there is food stability in the home, there is less chance of a downward spiral and instead, families have greater optimism, problem solving and hope for the future.”

East Hampton Food Pantry

Easthampton Food Pantry Board Member Claude Beudert spoke volumes when he said “When you care about something you act and when you act you make a difference.” This is clearly a philosophy which drives the staff and volunteers who operate the Pantry which serves anyone having trouble obtaining food or feeding themselves in East Hampton and Amagansett. According to the website over 7,000 households and 20,000 meals are served annually. Post pandemic, the number quadrupled with more families served in June than in all of 2019. Begun in 1989 with the belief that no one in one of the most affluent communities in the world should be hungry. Their mission is to eliminate hunger one meal at a time, raise awareness and encourage support from individuals and businesses. Pantry clients now drive up to collect a staple bag and choices of meat, vegetable, dairy and fruit items. Food is donated by Long Island Cares, LI Harvest and local purveyors. Another valuable partner is the Jon Bon Jovi Foundation which weekly supplies needed items which are transported and unloaded by volunteers and often Jon Bovi himself. Mr. Beudert underscored how thankful and dependent the organization is on donations from both the local and part time community and how far a dollar can go –$100 feeds a family for 1 week, and $5000 feeds a family for a year. With this in mind, every donation makes a huge impact.

SFEE has been able to help these pantries, as well as others, only through the generous donations of our members which continue to come in each day. Each organization has sent a loud and clear Thank You for the assistance which they greatly need and appreciate at this unprecedented time.
