“With love from the SHM”

Did you know Southampton was once a village without trees?

As we celebrate Arbor Day, this postcard reminds us of First Neck Lane as it appeared more than 100 years ago, after a dedicated tree-planting effort initiated by the town in the 1880s. What remains of these century-old trees still forms part of the graceful canopy that defines our historic landscapes today, though many have been lost over time.
