Last Week of Lessons in the Barn Before Kick-Off Party

————————————–

————————

Our last Line Dancing lesson with Lady T is tonight, May 16 at 7:00 PM in the barn at the Maple Lane Campus. Our previous dance lesson nights have been a huge success, with people describing line dancing as fun and challenging. Space is limited. Please RSVP.

The lessons with Lady T will culminate with a high-energy Line Dancing Party featuring live music by County Line — Long Island’s own dance-centric country band, on Friday, May 23, at 7:00 PM. There will be a larger outdoor dance floor for this event to kick off our Opening Weekend!

We hope to see you there!

Join Us for a Student-Led History Tour of Southold

————————

Join us for a unique, student-led walking tour through historic Southold! Fourth-grade students from the Southold School District will take turns guiding us through 14 landmark locations, sharing researched stories and local history at each stop along the way.

This engaging and educational experience is a collaboration between Southold Historical Museum and Southold Elementary School to celebrate our shared heritage through the voices of our young historians. The tour begins at Southold Elementary School and concludes at the Museum’s Maple Lane Complex, where we’ll celebrate the students’ hard work and dedication with Italian ices for all.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Comfortable walking shoes and water bottles are recommended.

Come support our students and enjoy a walk through time in the heart of Southold!

View Mia Certic’s Recent Lecture on Our YouTube Channel

——————————–

We were so pleased to welcome Mia Certic, the executive director at Montauk Historical Society as our guest speaker during a special presentation at the Maple Lane Campus on May 8 titled: “The Tragedy of the Pelican”.

Ms. Certic detailed how sixty-four people set sail from Montauk for a day’s fishing on the morning of September 1, 1951, when a freak storm rolled in and capsized the fishing vessel only a mile off the Montauk Point Lighthouse. Forty five were lost and many were never recovered.

The lecture attracted a nice crowd in person at our Mayne Gallery, as well as several Zoom call-in participants. There were several family members and those directly affected by the tragedy in attendance as well, who made it especially poignant.

Young Artists at Our Step Back in History Week

————————

Our Education of Youth Committee volunteers have wrapped up another Step Back in History Week program welcoming students to learn about our history.

The week-long programming taught students about life in historic Southold. One day, students were invited to walk the grounds and sketch the lighthouse, with very impressive results.

The Education of Youth Committee is comprised of volunteers who play a key role in our mission of sharing education about Southold’s history with the youth in our community. This program ensures interest and knowledge about the community’s storied past proceeds to the next generation. Thank you!
