The Southold Mothers’ Club came to visit the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse on Friday, July 21.
————
Families had an opportunity to climb the tower and to explore the exhibits, including the Whale House – a favorite for children. Did you know that the Museum houses a partial Fin Whale skull in the Whale House?
————
We welcome private group tours like Southold Mothers’ Club. Our volunteers have as much fun as the visitors!
————
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please bring a lawn chair and join us on the grounds of the Horton Point Lighthouse for a thrilling lecture by Ray Nofi titled: “History of the Holland Submarine”.
————
The lecture is at 2pm on Saturday, August 5 and is part of our Summer Lighthouse Lecture Series.
————
Mr. Nofi, chair of the Lighthouse Committee, will discuss the history of this famous submarine tested in the waters off New Suffolk.
————
The lecture is presented by Southold Historical Museum and is free to attend.
Note there is a $5 per car parking fee for non-residents.
Rain date is August 6.
This aerial image was a gift from Donald Tuthill. It depicts the southwestern tip of Hogs Neck (Bayview). The wetlands that make up Cedar Beach are visible as well as the surrounding area. If you zoom in, you can see that some cottages were already built. Unfortunately, we do not know the year of this photo.
————
Today, Cornell Cooperative operates its Marine Learning Center from here, as it has excellent access to the waters and marine life. Suffolk County owns the park itself at Cedar Beach.
————
If you were to follow the shore line (to the left in the photo), you would end up on the other tip of the Bayview peninsula, at Paradise Point.
————
Everyone is invited to view the artists’ work and you may consider a purchase for $100, half of which will benefit Southold Historical Museum.
