Last Weekend to Visit Our Museum Exhibits!

———————————————————-

This weekend is your last chance to visit the museum exhibits at Maple Lane Complex and the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse before they close for the season.

——————

Head over on Saturday or Sunday to explore the exhibits and learn about the history of the area. Don’t miss the opportunity to see “Answering the Call: The History of Southold Fire Department” exhibit before it’s gone.  The Nautical Museum also features many new exhibits and special interactive stations for children.

——————

We want to thank all of our volunteers and sponsors for making this season a success! We were so pleased to welcome visitors and tour groups from all over. You can still contact us to inquire about private tours for your group or club at 631-765-5500 or info@southoldhistorical.org

Be sure to stay tuned for exciting upcoming community events throughout the year!

Collections Corner: Handmade Hooded Cradle

———————————————————-

Israel Case made this charming, circa 1700s hooded cradle on display in the Thomas Moore/Samuel Landon House at the Maple Lane Complex. It was used to rock generations and generations of infants in the Case family ancestry to sleep.

——————

A cradle can only be used for the first four months or so of a baby’s life, or until they are able to turn over. The gentle rocking motion of a cradle is believed to relax infants and help them fall asleep by. The confined space would help them to feel protected and secure during the night.

——————

Israel Case was the ancestor of W. Courtland Case, who donated the item to our collection.
