In 1844, the Long Island Railroad finished laying the tracks out to Greenport. The train provided local residents with an alternative method of transportation not only in and out of the city, but to the other hamlets in town. Local letters and diaries note the residents took a car (a slang term for the train) to visit family members as well as travel in and out of the city.
——-
This particular toy train set is from circa 1870 and came from the toy collection of Christopher B. Moore of Greenport. The set was presented to the Museum in 1961 and is part of our collection.
