This blue colored photo is known as a cyanotype. The image was taken from the top of the Southold Presbyterian Church steeple looking north. The railroad tracks can be seen running across the center of the image. The house in the foreground is the house next to Town Hall. The smaller house no longer stands.
—–
Cyanotype photography was known for the brilliant blue (cyan) tint of the final print. The process used potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate solutions to create an iron-rich sensitizer solution. The solution is then applied over the paper, and the chemicals react to light. The final step is a water rinse. The blue color darkens as the print dries.
