Southold Historical Museum collaborated with CAST, the Center for Advocacy, Support and Transformation, and some of its clients for an evening of family fun, games, tours and a barbecue at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse.
———
The Museum welcomed the guests to also step inside the lighthouse to learn about the maritime history of Southold. CAST offered simultaneous Spanish translation for visitors. Additionally, they translated some of the Museum’s section panels into Spanish so that future Spanish-speaking visitors can learn about the local maritime history as well. Tours of the Nautical Museum included all new exhibits, a climb to the top of the tower and beautiful sunset views.
———
The Nautical Museum is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays, 11:30 – 4 through Sept. 17.

We invite you to encourage High School Students entering grade 10 and up and residing in Southold Town to apply for our Bainbridge Internship Program and Gardiner Young Scholar program for 2023!
———
This is a terrific opportunity for a local student to gain a hands-on understanding of the many operations that help Southold Historical Museum preserve and share Southold’s history for our community and future generations.
———
The internship requires the completion of 100 hours of service to the museum between July 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023, and is accompanied by a $1,500 stipend.
———
The application below is provided for both opportunities.

This coffee grinder in our collection was manufactured in the late 1800s by The Charles Parker Company of Meriden, CT.
———
Today we have electric coffee grinders, pods and drip coffee makers, but the grinding mechanism on this piece was revolutionary for its time. The company received a patent in 1855.
———
Beans are placed in the upper chamber. Inside the hand-cranked machine are two grooved, conical grinding cavities with one cavity placed directly above the other. The upper grinder serves as a cracker, and the lower grinder reduces course grinds into the requisite degree of fineness. The construction enabled the user to grind more rapidly with the same expenditure of power.
———
If it looks heavy, that’s because it is. It’s made of cast iron and weighs over 40 pounds.
———
It was built to last a lifetime.

Have you considered purchasing a commemorative brick for our exciting “Buy a Brick” Campaign? Now would be an ideal time, as the deadline has been extended to JUNE 10 to be included in our next installment! We install the beautifully inscribed bricks once a year, typically during the late summer/early fall. Don’t hesitate to order online now if you would like your brick included for this year.
————
Everyone is invited to buy a brick, either for you or for someone else, to commemorate special occasions such as the birth of a baby, graduations, and outstanding accomplishments.
