Did You Know: Helen Keller was a resident of Southold one summer in 1836 when she stayed in a Tudor-style home near Cedar Beach with her long-time companion Anne Macy Sullivan (1886-1936).
——————-
Keller, who was blind and deaf and later became a well-known activist and educator, made use of a rope that could guide her to the water’s edge on her own. While enjoying her stay, unfortunately her companion became ill and was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport and then back to NYC where she died.
——————-
The home was later acquired by Suffolk County to add to its parkland holdings and was demolished. It stood just north of the current Cornell Cooperative Extension marine program buildings at Cedar Beach.

Please join us for a day of community fun on Feb. 18 at Southold Winterfest!
——————-
Southold Historical Museum’s Maple Lane Complex, 55200 Main Rd., will be open for tours from 1pm – 4pm and volunteers will be on hand to share the history of the historic houses. You can bring friends and family to explore the buildings and grounds.
——————-
There will be a children’s craft in the 1822 Bay View Schoolhouse and the Museum Gift Shop and Treasure Exchange will be open 11am – 3pm. Southold Indian Museum will also be at the Complex with a special display of local Native American artifacts in the Reichert Barn, and will offer an “artifact ID” for found items.

——————-
Valentine’s Day is coming and the Treasure Exchange has some beautiful, one-of-a-kind gifts to give to your loved one.
——————-
You could consider an antique bowl that you might fill with local chocolates perhaps. Or, maybe wine glasses bought here combined with a local bottle of wine. Or an antique plate filled with homemade heart-shaped cookies?
——————-
The assortment is always changing and there are many children’s items as well. There are also thoughtful gifts in our Museum Gift Shop. We’d LOVE to see you!
