“Undercover: Stories of Rum Running in Southold” explores the unexpected sites and fascinating stories linked to the history of rum running in Southold during Prohibition.
—–
On display through Sept. 18 at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse, the exhibit includes the history of this time period as well as accounts and recollections. It also reveals some local spots tied to rum running activity.
—–
The Nautical Museum is open from 11:30am-4pm, weekends through mid-September. We invite you to come see the exhibit, explore the other artifacts and relics that detail the town’s rich maritime history, and enjoy the spectacular views and scenic grounds.
—–
Suggested admission is $5/adult or $10 for families and also includes entry to the historic Maple Lane Complex, where you can view the special exhibit, “Summer Colonies of Southold.”
—–
Note: Parking at the lighthouse is available in the Southold Park District’s lot for a $5 fee (if not a Park District resident).

Justyna Solowinska, left, is our 2022 Bainbridge Memorial Intern. She is a rising senior at Mattituck-Cutchogue Jr./Sr. High School. Justyna has been volunteering in the community for years, including at Our Lady of Ostrabama Church, the school Interact/Rotary Club, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, and at other local events.
————
Reagan Treharne, right, is our 2022 Gardiner Young Scholar. Reagan is a rising Sophomore at Southold Jr./Sr. High School. She is an active volunteer in the community through programs such as Cure for Cammy fundraisers and events, and the Silver Award for Community Service through Girl Scouts of America.

Both of these fine students can be found interning this summer at Southold Historical Museum. You can find them offering tours while they serve as docents at the Maple Lane Complex, lending a hand at Museum events and fundraisers, and scanning photos/working in our archives.

We’ll unveil the newest bricks added to our beautiful Brick Garden
at the Maple Lane Complex at 11am on Sat., Sept 10.
—–
You’re welcome to join us!
—–
You can also contact us if you are interested in purchasing a memorial brick,
which serves as a wonderful tribute and lasting legacy in our town.

“One tablet every 2 hours with water”, read the instructions
from this 1937 prescription envelope that’s in our collection.
—–
Today, we are accustomed to receiving our prescriptions in little orange/brown bottles. However, back then your prescription might have been given to you by the doctor in a small envelope such as the one pictured here.
—–
Also noteworthy are Dr. Stokes office hours. Notice that he is only open from “1 to 2 and 6 to 8 p.m.” This is likely because during the rest of the day he, like other doctors of the time, made home visits.
