This item in our collection at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse is a model of the Holland submarine, which was tested right here in the waters off of New Suffolk.
————
John Philip Holland was an Irish immigrant who was fascinated with the design of low profile torpedo boats that were in use as early as the War of 1812. His goal was to create a craft that would be fully submersible and could travel underwater.
————
Holland built the first successful submarine and attempted several, nearly disastrous, trial voyages in New York Harbor. He came to New Suffolk where he tested at least five submarines using a three-mile stretch in Peconic Bay where there was far less boat traffic.
————
You’re invited to come view this and other fascinating exhibits and models detailing Southold’s maritime history at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse. The Museum will be open 11:30am – 4pm during the lecture on the Holland submarine this Saturday at 2pm.

Thanks to all who voted for Horton Point Lighthouse as “Best Local Landmark” in Northforker magazine’s 2023 Best of the North Fork. As a part of the annual awards, Northforker asked readers to select their favorite North Fork locations.
————
Several thousand readers cast their votes from a list of winners compiled by staff. There were more than 30 repeat picks from last year’s contest, but also a handful of first-time winners. Some of the winners were decided by just a handful of votes.
————
We appreciate the votes as they bring added publicity to the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse.
