Many people have heard of Whitney M. Hubbard (1875-1965), a local artist and teacher, and can recognize his work. We hazard to guess that only a small group of people could identify him by face.
——-
This photograph was taken by Marge Tuthill in the living room of Hubbard’s home in Greenport in 1963 and puts a face to the name (and to his artwork).
——-
Hubbard moved with his family to Greenport in 1888 and after leaving to attend college, returned for his remaining years. He taught art locally and was a prolific painter himself especially ‘en plein air’ (in the open air).
