Join us for our latest exhibit at the Maple Lane Complex Mayne Gallery opening July 1 titled “Answering the Call: The History of Southold Fire Department”. Discover how a brave group of firefighters sprang into action to protect the growing town!
————
Prior to the creation of a consolidated Fire Department in 1937, there were three companies with their own districts in Southold. The exhibition explores what was the foundation of today’s Southold Fire Department.
————
Visitors will also learn about the many ways that Southold Fire Department engages with the community today, including rescues, education, and prevention. Curated by Lee Cleary and the Exhibits Committee.
————
Don’t miss your chance to see this fascinating history on display, weekends from 1pm-4pm until September 17. Admission is $5 or $10/families and includes the exhibit, access to the buildings and grounds, and access to the nearby Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse.

Bring your lawn chairs and join us for a riveting presentation titled “The Sinking of the Steamboat Lexington,” the first in our Lighthouse Lecture Series beginning at 2pm on July 8 on the grounds of Horton Point Lighthouse.
————
Author Bill Bleyer will tell the harrowing story of a ship’s journey from glory to tragedy. Originally commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt as he built his maritime empire in New York, the Steamboat Lexington eventually became the most prestigious steamship on the heavily trafficked Long Island Sound.
————
But, in 1840, a fire broke out on the ship, igniting poorly placed bales of cotton which destroyed the ship in minutes. Emergency rafts sank and rescue boats were unable to reach the ship in time. Only four among the over one hundred and forty on board survived by clinging to bales of cotton.
————
The incident would be the worst maritime disaster in Long Island history. Come learn more at this free lecture.
————
Rain date 2pm, July 9.
