Did you know the famous British composer Benjamin Britten spent part of his time in Southold while he was in America (1939-1942)? While here, he befriended the Rothman family, which owned the local department and variety store in town.
————
David Rothman arranged work for Britten and his promising tenor friend, Peter Pears, and arranged for Britten to be accompanist for the Southold Town Choral Society, which later became today’s North Fork Chorale.
————
In addition, Britten and Pears performed the original version of the song “Tom Bowling” at a recital at Southold High School on December 14, 1941.
