This interior photo of the First Presbyterian Church of Southold shows a sanctuary that looks somewhat different than today. In the late 1800s, the church had an impressive pipe organ in the front of the sanctuary. The First Presbyterian Church of Southold was not the only church to have this layout. Orient Congregational Church and Orient Methodist Church also had their pipe organs in the front of the church during this time period. The idea was that music was such an integral part of the service that its creation should be “showcased” in the sanctuary during the service.

Southold Historical Society is pleased to offer an exciting family event this spring, the “Discover Southold Scavenger Hunt.” Join in the fun on Saturday, April 17, 2021(rain date is Sunday April 18).

Fun for all ages, the only requirement is a smart phone to download the Goose Chase app. Most targets are within walking distance from each other, centered around the hamlet area. Participants will be asked to take a selfie with Albert Einstein or count how many windows are on the Thomas Moore House. This a creative way to get your friends and family outdoors and moving all while learning about the history of Southold.

The scavenger hunt starts at 10am and runs through 3pm. The first, second and third place teams including names and photos will also be announced on our website, as well as on Facebook and Instagram! Get prepared to hunt for Southold’s treasures!

Are you a current member of Southold Historical Society? We sure hope so. Membership has its benefits. It affords you a 10% discount at the Museum Gift Shop and Horton Point Lighthouse Gift Shop. You receive invitations to special events and exhibitions. Though we had to postpone or cancel some of the 2020 events, we are looking forward to their return in the year ahead.
We realize that for many of you the benefit of membership renewal is knowing that you are supporting the education and preservation of Southold’s rich local history and keeping your local museum alive.  We thank you for sharing the belief that our history is worth saving.
