WINE BY THE VINES

SILENT AUCTION PREVIEW

Redecorating your home? Looking for a distinctive gift for someone special? Are you long overdue for some self-indulgence? Check out the treasures and treats at Southold Historical Society’s Silent Auction.
————
The online auction will begin on Saturday, May 1, 2021 and run through May 15, 2021. With a variety of high quality items to bid on, lots will include something for everyone in a range of values. Opening bids will begin low to encourage lively bidding and widespread support of Southold Historical Society. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the history museum.
————
The auction committee has been busy gathering significant donations such as a painting by noted local artist, Madeline Brasserear, prints by S. Neil Fujita and Rich Fiedler, a one-of-a-kind squash blossom necklace, and an autographed postcard and written musical musing of Edwin Fischer. For the wine lovers, there is a VIP tasting and tour of Pellegrini Vineyards. Lots such as a collection of three culinary herb pots or combination of local restaurant gift certificates are perfect for either those who love to cook and for those who love to dine out!

COLLECTIONS CORNER:

In 1937, Phil Weckesser’s Gas Station, Store, and Tavern was located on the North Side of Main Rd. in Southold. The site sold Gulf gasoline, candy, and Breyer’s ice cream. On the right was Phil’s tavern. The Tavern later moved across the street to the corner of Main and Hobart. Today, delis occupy both of these locations.

BAINBRIDGE INTERNSHIP

Southold Historical Society is pleased to offer the Bainbridge Internship Program for the year 2021. This internship is a terrific opportunity for a local student to gain a hands-on understanding of the many operations that help Southold Historical Society preserve and share Southold’s history for our community and future generations.
       ————
The internship requires the completion of 100 hours of service to the Society and is accompanied by a $1,500 stipend. Potential candidates must be a sophomore through senior and must apply for the position. An application and other details are included with this letter. We are asking for your help in promoting this opportunity. Please feel free to copy the attached info or request copies from us. We hope you will distribute them to as many students as possible.
————
Applications should be submitted to the Society no later than May 15, 2021. A decision will be made soon after that date on who will be awarded the position. The associated hours must be completed by December 31, 2021.

REOPENING NEWS!!!

What’s Old is New Again!

————
The Board of Trustees, Staff, and Volunteers of Southold Historical Society are eagerly anticipating the weekend of July 1-4. Why, you ask? Because the museum will be reopening beginning July 1 with many updates, including a new look. Though we have missed having visitors, the time while the museum has been closed has allowed us to work on updating our logo, our name, and a number of our exhibits. We look forward to sharing them with you, and welcoming you back to the numerous locations.
————
Please save the date of July 1 and 3, as we develop the schedule of the new logo reveal, the preview of our new exhibitions, and a brick dedication.
————
After the kick off, visitors will be welcomed to the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse and the Maple Lane Museum Complex Saturdays and Sundays from July 3 through Sept. 12.
————
Look for a reopening of our shops at the Prince Building as well. Currently, the Museum Gift Shop is open on Fridays from 11am-3pm and other weekdays by appointment.
————
We are thrilled to share this terrific news. We promise to keep you posted on the details in the coming months.
————
From all of us at Southold Historical Society, thank you for your continued support.
