Collections Corner: Local Oyster and Scallop Companies

————————

These containers in our collection at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse are a reminder of a time when the oyster and scallop populations were wildly abundant in Peconic Bay.

————————

Dating back to the mid- to late-1800s into the 1900s, commercial baymen were reaping them by the bushels to sell to distributors who canned them and sold them to upscale restaurants in New York City. Some of the companies in the area included Sterling Point Oysters and Shelter Island Bay Scallops, pictured here.

————————

Native Americans harvested shellfish in the bay for hundreds of years before. Oysters can live for up to 20 years if undisturbed, and it typically takes three to five years for an oyster to reach just three inches in the wild. Their habitat varies from rocky areas to soft sand.
