Regular Museum Admission. Free to Members.
Since the 1970s, Stephen Sanfilippo & his wife Susan have been researching Long Island’s historic maritime songs. In this special performance, Stephen will take us on a musical voyage through Suffolk County’s historic connections to the sea, performing songs from the late 1800s and beyond with his vocals, banjo, concertina, & guitar. Sing-along to songs about a Greenport whaling ship, the romance of a whaler, rum-running, shipwrecks, clamming, & spearing for eels, to name a few. Stephen’s performance is certain to provoke interesting insights into the nature, history, & people of maritime Long Island.
ABOUT THE PERFORMER: Stephen Sanfilippo, a native Long Islander who earned his Ph.D. in history at Stony Brook University, has long been performing historic songs of the sea at cultural and educational venues. A founder and past president of the Long Island Traditional Music Association and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, Stephen taught American history at Longwood High School, Suffolk County Community College, the University of Maine, and Maine Maritime Academy.
